Professional division
Avant-Garde is pleased to offer a professional music division geared
to individuals who want to pursue a career in music and pursue undergraduate
studies.
As you take your instrument class and continue progressing, you
will need to study harmony, counterpoint, analysis and history to enable you
to graduate with Royal Conservatory of Music ARCT diploma. Our program is based on
the RCM syllabus. You will be required to take the practical examination for
grades 9 to ARCT.
Our program focuses on Classical Music, developing
professional-grade musicianship and discipline. We prime you for serious
performance, the ability to critique and be critiqued, to exercise critical
thinking skills and become a confident instructor.

Parents must fully understand the commitment involved to support their children in these steps and discipline required. We are continually sensitive

Students in the professional division must keep their junior high or high school marks in
good standing with the school. Minimum GPA of 3 or 75% is required. Contact us for further details.

Piano, violin and voice: Grades 9 and 10

Suggested practice time: 2 to 3
hours, 6 times a week
Advanced Rudiments, Basic Harmony and History I
must be completed to obtain Grade 9 certificate.
Advanced Rudiments, History I, Intermediate Harmony, and History II must be completed to obtain Grade 10 certificate.
Piano,violin and voice: ARCT Performance
Lesson length: 60 minutes once a
week
Location: Studio or in-home
Exam dates: January or June (date is
recommended by the instructor

on the student's progress)
Suggested practice time: 4 hours, 6 times a week
Grade 10 practical examination, Counterpoint, Advanced Harmony, History 3, and Analysis must be completed to obatin diploma. In addition , Grade 6 Piano is required for Non-piano subjects only.

1. Elementary Piano Pedagogy Certificate
Lesson length: 60 minutes once a
week

Exam dates: January or June (date is

on the student's progress) Grade 9 practical examination, Elementary Pedagogy Viva Voce, and Elementary Pedagogy written must be completed to obtain certificate.
2. Intermediate Piano Pedagogy Certificate

Grade 10 practical examination, Intermediate Pedagogy Viva Voce, and Intermediate Pedagogy written must be

Advanced Pedagogy Viva Voce, Advanced Pedagogy written, Advaced Harmony, Counterpoint, and History III must be
completed to obtain diploma.
Pre-requisites: Elementary piano pedagogy and Intermediate piano pedagogy.
